Ceramic Dinnerware Sourcing: Factory or Trading Company?

An Honest Answer from Alisa with 8 Years of Industry Experience

Hi buyers,
I’m Alisa from CY Ceramic Factory. I’ve been working in the ceramic dinnerware industry for 8 years, and today I don’t want to repeat what you usually read in factory brochures. Instead, let’s talk honestly about a question many buyers struggle with:

Should you source ceramic dinnerware directly from a factory, or work through a trading company?

Factory VS Trading Company

Working Directly with a Ceramic Dinnerware Factory

If you contact a factory like ours directly—by email, phone, or factory visit—I’m always happy to talk. Direct factory cooperation usually means:

More transparent pricing
You can clearly understand how the price is formed, from raw materials to firing and labor, without worrying about hidden markups.

Clearer production details
Want to know the glaze composition? Firing temperature? Production tolerance? I can give you accurate answers directly, instead of saying, “Let me check with the factory and get back to you.”

More flexible customization
Just last week, a client asked to slightly adjust the bowl rim curvature. Our engineers joined a video call with the buyer, and we finalized a revised sample within two days.

That said—let me be honest—not every buyer is suitable for working directly with a factory.

Factory VS Trading Company

A Real Case from Last Week

An Australian restaurant group contacted us to customize 500 mixed Western–Asian dinnerware sets. Everything went smoothly at first, until we reached the logistics stage:

  • Shipment split into three batches to different ports

  • SGS inspection required for each batch

  • Packaging needed to meet local environmental standards

  • Special invoice and customs document formats were required

Our production team is highly professional, but international logistics and document handling are not our strongest areas. We completed the order, but the process was more complicated and time-consuming than expected.

The Hidden Value of a Good Trading Company

This is where a reliable trading company can show real value.

From my experience, a good trading company can help you:

Save time
They know the strengths of different factories and can quickly match your needs with the right supplier.

Reduce risk
They usually have structured inspection procedures to control quality before shipment.

Handle complicated tasks
From documentation to container booking, these small but critical details are often handled more efficiently by experienced traders.

Some trading partners we’ve worked with for years can even help buyers forecast ocean freight trends and suggest the best shipping timing—this kind of market insight is something factories focused on production may not always have.

My Honest Advice After 8 Years in the Industry

Based on real experience, here’s a simple way to decide:

When it makes sense to work directly with a factory:

  • Large and stable orders (e.g. at least one container per month)

  • Standardized products with limited customization

  • You have your own QC team or understand China sourcing

  • You have basic knowledge of ceramic manufacturing

When a trading company may be a better choice:

  • Mixed product categories and smaller quantities

  • You need one-stop service (production + logistics + documents)

  • First-time sourcing or limited industry experience

  • Special requirements for packaging, certification, or paperwork

No Matter Which Option You Choose

Visit the factory if possible.
Ceramic dinnerware is about texture, glaze feel, weight, and finishing. Photos and videos never tell the full story. When you visit, you can touch green bodies, see glaze preparation, and feel the kiln environment—this matters more than any brochure.

Always request samples.
Paying for samples before mass production is one of the safest investments you can make. It prevents costly mistakes later.

Ask detailed questions.
Don’t hesitate to ask whether a design is underglaze or decal, or to request lead and cadmium test reports. A professional supplier will always answer transparently.

A Final Thought

Today, cooperation models are becoming more flexible. Some buyers work directly with factories like us for production and customization, while outsourcing logistics and documentation to professional trading companies. In many cases, this hybrid approach delivers the highest efficiency.

At the end of the day, whether you choose a factory or a trading company, the most important thing is finding a reliable long-term partner. China’s ceramic dinnerware industry is mature, with many excellent options.
